Jagdgeschwader 5 Eismeer Sticker

£6.00
Jagdgeschwader 5, the fighter wing known as "Eismeer".

The shield design shows the midnight sun rising over a dark Arctic coastline, with ice floes drifting on the sea below and the EISMEER name in snow-capped lettering.

JG 5 was formed in 1942 and flew from bases across northern Norway and Finland, the most northerly air war of the Second World War. Its Bf 109s and Fw 190s fought Soviet air forces over Murmansk and the Kola Peninsula, attacked the Arctic convoys carrying Allied supplies to Russia, and clashed with RAF Coastal Command strike wings off the Norwegian coast. In February 1945, over Førde Fjord, its fighters shot down several RAF Beaufighters in a single engagement that Coastal Command crews remembered as "Black Friday".

It was a war of endless summer daylight, months-long polar night, ice and extreme cold, fought by airmen on both sides in some of the harshest conditions any air force faced.
